Forty students at the Bellampalli Government SC Girls Hostel in Mancherial district were hospitalised on Friday after falling ill from suspected food poisoning. The students reportedly began experiencing dizziness and vomiting shortly after dinner, prompting immediate medical attention. Allegations have surfaced that the rice served was infested with worms, triggering widespread panic among the hostel residents.
Several students shared harrowing accounts on social media, claiming the hostel staff initially ignored their complaints. One student recounted that the warden refused to call an ambulance, fearing job repercussions, and instead brought in a quack to administer injections without consulting a doctor. Parents had to intervene before students were finally taken to the hospital for proper treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the students exhibited classic symptoms of food poisoning, including severe stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Hospital sources reported that while most students are stable, a few remain under observation due to dehydration. Investigations into the source of contamination are ongoing, with food samples reportedly being sent for laboratory testing.

The incident has ignited outrage among parents and local residents, who are demanding strict action against the hostel staff and management. Students also voiced concern about the upcoming Class 10 pre-final exams, highlighting the potential impact of such incidents on their academic preparation.
This outbreak adds to a recent surge of food-related illnesses in Telangana. Last week, 38 students at Bodiyathanda Government Primary School were hospitalised, including ten in critical condition, after consuming mid-day meals. A day prior, 45 students fell ill in Sangareddy district, raising questions about hygiene and safety standards in state-run institutions.
Officials from the Telangana State Education Department have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and appropriate measures will be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. Enhanced food safety protocols and strict supervision of hostel kitchens are expected to be implemented immediately.
