At least 18 people were killed on Saturday in a fire following an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Vetlapalem village, Kakinada district, Andhra Pradesh. Authorities said several others were critically injured and have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The explosion occurred at the Baanasancha manufacturing center, which reportedly had around 20 workers on site at the time. Officials said the blast triggered a fire that quickly engulfed the facility, resulting in significant casualties.
Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha described the incident as “profoundly shocking” and confirmed that immediate assistance was being provided to the affected individuals. “The government, on its behalf, will support the affected in every possible way,” she said, adding that relief and rescue operations were being closely monitored.

Collector and District Magistrate Sagili Shan Mohan reported that several injured people are in critical condition, highlighting the urgent need for medical intervention. Rescue teams were deployed to control the fire and provide aid to victims while ensuring the safety of nearby residents.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Speaking from a tour in Vizianagaram, he directed officials to extend immediate help to the victims and monitor relief efforts closely, emphasizing support for affected families.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation, with authorities examining safety protocols at the facility. Officials have urged similar manufacturing units across the state to ensure compliance with safety standards to prevent such accidents in the future.
