Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, yesterday, called on MLAs to spearhead a renewable energy revolution by ensuring 10,000 rooftop solar power units are installed in each constituency.
Speaking in the State Assembly in Amaravati, Naidu championed the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a central scheme aimed at making solar power accessible to households. He urged legislators to educate their constituents about the benefits, framing it as a chance for people to become both producers and consumers of electricity.
“Everyone can generate power and sell surplus back to the grid,” Naidu said, emphasizing the dual economic and environmental advantages. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader set an ambitious statewide target of 20 lakh rooftop solar units by the end of 2025, positioning Andhra Pradesh as a pioneer in solar adoption.
Posts on social media reflect public support for this vision, with some highlighting subsidies of up to Rs 80,000 for Backward Classes and free installations for 25 lakh SC/ST households. Naidu’s broader renewable energy strategy is equally bold. He aims to attract Rs 10 lakh crore in investments to generate 160 GW of green power through solar, wind, pumped storage, and bio-energy projects.
This aligns with his critique of past mismanagement in the power sector, which he claims cost the state Rs 9,000 crore due to canceled agreements. With plans to equip 3.85 lakh agricultural motors with solar power, Naidu’s initiative seeks to blend sustainability with economic empowerment, urging MLAs to bridge the gap between policy and people.
