Karnataka’s political leadership transition has taken a decisive turn, with sources indicating that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is not interested in accepting a Rajya Sabha seat and prefers to continue as an MLA for the next two years. The development comes amid intense political negotiations within the Congress party over a potential change of guard in the state leadership, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emerging as the frontrunner to assume the top post. Party offices and leaders’ residences in Bengaluru have witnessed continuous discussions as the high command works to finalise the transition plan.
According to party insiders, the Congress leadership had offered Siddaramaiah one of the Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka, alongside other key nominations being discussed within the party structure. However, sources suggest that Siddaramaiah is inclined to remain active in state politics rather than shift to national responsibilities at this stage. The proposal was reportedly part of a broader internal arrangement aimed at balancing representation among senior leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and DK Suresh, brother of DK Shivakumar.
The leadership discussions have also involved senior Congress figures, including Rahul Gandhi, who is said to have held a detailed meeting with Siddaramaiah in Delhi. During the discussion, Gandhi reportedly emphasised the importance of strengthening the party’s national strategy ahead of the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. Party leaders have, however, publicly described the ongoing conversations as routine organisational consultations, even as speculation continues over an imminent change in the state’s top leadership.

The transition process has been marked by competing expectations within the party, particularly over the possibility of a rotational chief ministership agreement between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. While Shivakumar’s supporters have long argued for his elevation based on his role in the party’s electoral victory, Siddaramaiah’s camp is reportedly seeking safeguards, including key cabinet positions for his supporters and potential adjustments in party structure. Despite internal differences, both leaders have so far maintained public restraint while discussions continue at the central leadership level.
Adding to the uncertainty is the logistical delay caused by Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot’s temporary absence from Bengaluru due to a family emergency. This has slowed the formal procedural steps required for any immediate leadership change. Meanwhile, reports suggest that a possible breakfast meeting between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar could help clarify the next course of action and project unity within the state Congress unit ahead of the formal announcement.
As the political situation continues to evolve, the Congress high command is expected to finalise a resolution that balances leadership aspirations with organisational stability. While Siddaramaiah remains firm on staying in state politics for now, the final outcome will depend on continued negotiations in Delhi and Bengaluru, with a formal announcement expected once consensus is achieved within the party leadership.
