The winter session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is scheduled to commence today, December 19, 2025, in Lucknow at 11 a.m., marking the start of a six-day proceedings concluding on December 24. The opening day will feature obituary references to deceased members, including Samajwadi Party MLA Sudhakar Singh from Ghosi constituency, followed by adjournment. Prominent on the agenda are a dedicated discussion commemorating the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram and the presentation of the state's first supplementary demands for grants for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Opposition parties, spearheaded by the Samajwadi Party and Congress, have prepared comprehensive strategies to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party government on critical public concerns. Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey has indicated intentions to address alleged irregularities in the codeine-based cough syrup distribution, discrepancies in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, fatalities among booth-level officers, deteriorating law and order, escalating inflation, unemployment, fertilizer availability issues, and delays in paddy procurement processes.

Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra 'Mona' has emphasized demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the cough syrup controversy, alongside deliberations on booth-level officer deaths, environmental pollution, and potential reforms including the renaming of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. Opposition leaders have collectively expressed dissatisfaction with the session's duration, advocating for an extension to facilitate in-depth discussions on matters affecting public welfare.

A pre-session all-party meeting chaired by Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana on December 18 sought commitments to parliamentary decorum from representatives of various parties, including Apna Dal (Sone Lal), Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, NISHAD Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, and others. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha's exemplary status among national legislatures, pledging responsive engagement with opposition-raised issues and referencing successful prior debates, such as the prolonged discussion on the Uttar Pradesh Vision Document-2047.

The government also plans to advance legislative measures by introducing bills to replace eight ordinances issued post the monsoon session, encompassing reforms in pension validation, municipal corporation amendments, ease of doing business enhancements, and regulations for private universities. As the session unfolds, it promises a combination of patriotic commemoration, financial allocations, and rigorous political scrutiny reflective of the state's multifaceted governance challenges.
