The Indian National Congress is facing a crucial political decision in Tamil Nadu as it considers extending support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay. The move has raised questions about the future of Congress’s long-standing alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which has been a key partner in the state for nearly two decades.
The political landscape shifted dramatically following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, where TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member House. In contrast, the DMK was reduced to 59 seats, while Congress managed to secure only five, marking a significant setback for the alliance that had dominated previous elections.
Amid this changing scenario, Vijay has formally sought Congress’s support to form the government, prompting high-level discussions within the party. Senior leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, held meetings in New Delhi to deliberate on the party’s strategy and assess the political implications of a potential shift.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal indicated that the final decision would be taken by the state unit while emphasising that the electoral mandate appears to favour a secular government. The statement has been widely interpreted as a signal that the party may be open to supporting TVK, despite its existing alliance commitments.
The possibility of Congress backing TVK has triggered sharp reactions from the DMK, with party leaders publicly criticising the move and accusing Congress of betrayal. The development reflects growing tensions within the alliance, especially after reports that grassroots workers had earlier favoured aligning with TVK rather than continuing with the DMK.
If formalised, the shift would mark a major realignment in Tamil Nadu politics, effectively ending one of the state’s longest political partnerships. It could also reshape opposition dynamics in the region, as parties reposition themselves in response to the emergence of TVK as a significant political force.
