New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has endorsed City Council candidate Lindsey Boylan—who was among the first women to publicly accuse former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment—in a closely watched local race, according to official statements and campaign updates.
Boylan, who is running in a Manhattan City Council special election, has been a prominent political figure since her 2020 allegations against Cuomo, which helped trigger broader investigations into the former governor’s conduct. Cuomo has denied wrongdoing, though a state investigation later found he had sexually harassed multiple women before resigning in 2021.
In his endorsement, Mamdani described Boylan as representing “fearless leadership,” praising her willingness to confront powerful political figures and speak publicly about her experiences. His support adds significant political weight to her campaign, given his rising influence within New York’s progressive wing following his own mayoral victory.

Boylan has previously said she endured inappropriate behaviour while working in Cuomo’s administration, allegations that became central to a wider scandal involving multiple accusers and intense political fallout across New York politics. Her current City Council campaign has focused on affordability, housing, and government accountability.
The endorsement has also drawn attention because of Mamdani’s past political rivalry with Cuomo, whom he defeated in the mayoral race last year after Cuomo re-entered politics as an independent candidate. Analysts view the move as part of Mamdani’s broader strategy to shape Democratic contests in New York by backing progressive and reform-minded candidates.
Political observers say the endorsement is likely to intensify debate within the city’s Democratic establishment, particularly given the sensitivity surrounding Cuomo’s past misconduct allegations and Boylan’s central role in bringing them to public attention. The special election is scheduled for later this month, and is expected to draw heightened scrutiny amid the already charged political atmosphere in New York City.
