Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, following a critical summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska that failed to secure a ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The announcement comes after a “long, meaningful” 90-minute phone conversation between Zelenskyy and Trump on Saturday, which also included European leaders.
“I am grateful for the invitation to discuss all details regarding ending the killing and the war,” Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing Ukraine’s commitment to productive dialogue. The call, initially a one-on-one discussion, expanded to include leaders like U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, signaling a united push for peace.
The Alaska summit, held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, saw Trump and Putin discuss a potential ceasefire but ended without an agreement. Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik criticized the meeting, stating Putin received a “warm welcome” while Ukraine “got nothing.” Zelenskyy, sidelined from the talks, stressed the need for Ukraine’s inclusion in negotiations to ensure a just and lasting peace.

Monday’s meeting aims to address these tensions and explore paths to end the conflict, which began with Russia’s 2022 invasion. Zelenskyy reiterated his gratitude for U.S. support but underscored the necessity of security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression. As Ukraine faces ongoing attacks, including a recent Russian assault with a ballistic missile and 85 drones, the stakes for this meeting are high.
