Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday announced a major reshuffle in the country's military leadership, dismissing Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky and appointing Joint Forces Commander Mykhailo Drapaty as the new head of the Armed Forces. The leadership change comes as Ukraine continues to fight Russia's full-scale invasion and follows a political crisis linked to the removal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
In a post on Telegram, Zelensky confirmed the appointment of Drapaty, saying he had decided that the experienced military commander would lead Ukraine's armed forces. The president also thanked Syrsky for his service, writing, "I am grateful to Oleksandr Syrsky and to each of our warriors for Ukraine's strong frontline positions." The announcement marks one of the most significant changes to Ukraine's military command structure since the start of the war.
Syrsky, 60, had served as commander-in-chief since 2024 and was regarded as one of Ukraine's most experienced military leaders. A Soviet-trained officer, he played a key role in organising the defence of Kyiv during the early stages of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, an operation widely credited with preventing Russian forces from capturing the Ukrainian capital. Throughout his military career, Syrsky held several senior operational commands and was closely involved in planning Ukraine's battlefield strategy.

His dismissal follows days of political tension after the removal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a popular and technology-focused official who had overseen several military modernisation initiatives. According to reports, Fedorov accused Syrsky of forcing him out of office and obstructing efforts to reform the armed forces. His removal sparked demonstrations by supporters, raising questions about divisions within Ukraine's political and military leadership at a critical stage of the war.
Mykhailo Drapaty, who now assumes command of the armed forces, has served as commander of Ukraine's Joint Forces and is expected to oversee military operations as the conflict with Russia continues. While the government has not outlined the specific reasons behind the leadership change, Drapaty's appointment signals Zelensky's intent to refresh the military's top command amid evolving battlefield conditions and broader institutional reforms.
The reshuffle comes as Ukraine faces continued military pressure along multiple frontlines while seeking to strengthen its defence capabilities with support from Western allies. Changes in senior military leadership are closely watched because they can influence operational planning, troop deployment and defence strategy. Although Zelensky expressed confidence in the new commander, the long-term impact of the leadership transition on Ukraine's military campaign is likely to become clearer in the months ahead as the war continues.
