A powerful winter storm sweeping across the United States has left at least 30 people dead as freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and widespread power outages continued to disrupt daily life in multiple regions. Millions of residents faced dangerous conditions as the system intensified over the Northeast while keeping parts of the South locked in icy conditions, according to U.S. media reports citing emergency authorities.
By Monday evening, more than 560,000 homes and businesses across the country were without electricity, data from PowerOutage.com showed. Utility crews struggled to restore service amid treacherous roads, strong winds, and subzero temperatures. Many affected residents endured a second consecutive night without heat, prompting local officials to open warming centers and urge people to avoid unnecessary travel.
The Northeast bore the brunt of the storm’s snowfall, with New York City recording its snowiest day in years. Snow-covered streets, reduced visibility, and hazardous driving conditions led to widespread delays and closures. Public transportation services were disrupted in several cities, while airports across the region reported cancellations and long delays as crews worked to clear runways.

Southern states were not spared, as freezing rain and ice coated roads and power lines, increasing the risk of accidents and infrastructure damage. Emergency services reported a surge in weather-related incidents, including vehicle crashes and exposure-related medical emergencies. Authorities attributed many of the reported deaths to hypothermia, traffic accidents, and carbon monoxide poisoning linked to improper heating methods.
Forecasters warned that the extreme cold was expected to persist, with below-freezing temperatures continuing across large parts of the country. Officials reiterated safety advisories, urging residents to stay indoors when possible, conserve power, and check on vulnerable individuals. As recovery efforts continue, the storm has once again highlighted the severe risks posed by extreme winter weather and the strain it places on infrastructure and emergency response systems.
