The devastating fire that tore through two warehouses in Nazirabad has left at least 27 people feared dead, sending shockwaves across West Bengal and triggering a fierce political response. The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of Monday, engulfed a momo manufacturing unit and a nearby decorator’s warehouse, reducing large sections of the structures to ashes.
Rescue officials said several bodies recovered from the site were charred beyond recognition, complicating identification efforts. Multiple people are still reported missing, raising fears that the death toll could rise further. Firefighters battled the inferno for several hours before bringing it under control, while search and recovery operations continued amid smoldering debris.
Preliminary information suggests that workers may have been trapped inside the warehouses when the fire erupted. Authorities are examining whether safety norms were violated and if inflammable materials stored on the premises contributed to the rapid spread of flames. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been officially confirmed.

The tragedy has sparked a sharp political confrontation, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launching a strong attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government. BJP leaders alleged administrative negligence and lapses in enforcement of fire safety regulations, demanding accountability and immediate action against those responsible.
Visuals from the site near Anandapur showed gutted buildings, twisted metal, and emergency personnel working through the ruins. Families of workers gathered near the cordoned-off area, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones, as police attempted to manage crowds and maintain order.
State authorities said a detailed investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the fire and assess compliance with safety norms. The West Bengal government has assured that those affected will receive assistance, while officials emphasised that accountability will be fixed once the probe is completed. The Nazirabad fire has once again raised urgent questions about industrial safety and regulatory oversight in densely populated areas.
