Around 600,000 laboratory-raised male mosquitoes are being released across the Washington, DC, area this summer as part of a new initiative aimed at reducing mosquito populations without using chemical insecticides. The mosquitoes have been infected with Wolbachia, a naturally occurring bacterium that prevents eggs from hatching after the males mate with wild female mosquitoes. Since only male mosquitoes are released, they do not bite humans or feed on blood, making the approach safe for residents.
The programme is being led by Bee Safe Mosquito Control, a Silver Spring-based company that has become the first private business in the United States to offer this mosquito-control technique directly to homeowners. Previously, similar projects had been carried out mainly by government agencies, mosquito control districts and research institutions. The company currently serves about 25 residential properties in Washington, DC, and neighbouring areas of Maryland.
As part of the programme, around 1,500 male mosquitoes are released every week in each participating backyard throughout the summer. The insects are supplied by Kentucky-based MosquitoMate, which uses technology developed at the University of Kentucky to breed mosquitoes carrying the Wolbachia bacterium. The repeated releases gradually reduce mosquito populations as fewer viable eggs hatch over time, lowering the number of mosquitoes in treated areas.

Bee Safe says the Wolbachia-based approach provides a targeted and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional insecticide spraying. Unlike chemical treatments, the method specifically affects mosquitoes while leaving beneficial insects, pollinators and other wildlife largely unaffected. In addition to this technique, the company also offers mosquito bait stations and biological treatments for standing water to help control breeding sites.
The technology has already shown promising results in other parts of the world. Singapore has released millions of Wolbachia-infected male mosquitoes under a nationwide programme, reporting mosquito population reductions of up to 90% in treated areas. The country plans to expand the initiative to cover half of all households by the end of 2026.
In the United States, Alphabet, Google's parent company, is also seeking regulatory approval to release millions of similar mosquitoes in California and Florida. Experts say growing interest in such methods comes as rising temperatures and changing climate conditions create more favourable environments for mosquitoes, increasing concerns over the spread of diseases such as dengue, Zika and West Nile virus.
