Several workers are feared dead and others injured after a major industrial accident involving molten steel at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), also known as the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, on Monday evening. The incident has triggered emergency response operations and prompted concerns over safety protocols at one of India’s key public sector steel facilities.
According to initial accounts from trade union leaders, the accident occurred around 4.30 pm in the plant’s Continuous Casting Department under the Steel Melting Shop section. Workers were reportedly engaged in routine operations when a ladle carrying molten steel malfunctioned, leading to a sudden spill of high-temperature liquid metal in the working area.
The intense heat and resulting fire trapped several employees nearby, causing multiple casualties. Some union representatives have claimed that up to nine bodies have been recovered, though official confirmation from the RINL management is still awaited. Authorities have not yet released a final death toll, and figures remain unverified as rescue operations continue.

Another account suggests that the incident took place during operations linked to NTC-3 Heat F, when a large volume of molten steel allegedly leaked while being lifted. The resulting blaze created panic within the plant, prompting immediate evacuation efforts and the deployment of fire and emergency response teams.
Injured workers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, while rescue personnel continued searching the affected area. The incident has raised serious concerns among employees and their families regarding workplace safety standards and operational safeguards within the steel plant.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the tragedy and directed district authorities to expedite rescue efforts. An official statement said he had spoken to plant officials and sought a detailed update on the situation. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident and identify any potential safety lapses.
