A 48-year-old man has been arrested in Utah after allegedly stabbing a Muslim man multiple times inside a shopping mall and telling investigators that he targeted the victim because of his religion. Police said the attack, which took place at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City on Monday, is being investigated as an attempted murder, with court records indicating the suspect expressed violent anti-Muslim views. According to an affidavit filed by police, the suspect approached the victim, who worked at a kiosk inside the mall, and began asking him personal questions, including his name and religion.
He also reportedly asked for a bottle of water before launching the attack. Investigators said the victim sustained multiple stab wounds across his body and was bleeding heavily when emergency responders arrived at the scene. Authorities identified the suspect as Peter Michael Larsen, 48, who was taken into custody after bystanders intervened and pinned him to the ground until police officers reached the mall. The quick actions of members of the public prevented the suspect from fleeing and helped officers secure the scene without further violence.
Police said Larsen later admitted that he had targeted the victim because he was Muslim. According to court documents, investigators stated that the suspect told them he "intends to kill Muslims" and warned that he posed "a substantial danger to the public if released based on his violent actions, ideologies and pre-planned mass casualty events." These statements have raised serious concerns among law enforcement regarding the suspect's motives and potential threat to public safety. The injured victim was rushed to hospital for treatment.

While authorities have confirmed that he suffered multiple stab wounds, they have not released further details about his medical condition. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether the suspect acted alone and if there were any prior indications of extremist intent. Larsen was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and is being investigated on charges including attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct, according to jail records. Prosecutors are expected to review the evidence and determine whether additional charges, including hate crime-related offences under applicable laws, should be pursued as the investigation progresses.
The incident has renewed concerns about religiously motivated violence and the safety of minority communities in public spaces. Authorities have urged anyone who witnessed the attack or has relevant information to cooperate with investigators as they continue to gather evidence. Police have also praised the bystanders whose intervention helped restrain the suspect before officers arrived, preventing what they believe could have been an even more serious incident.
