Reports have emerged of growing uncertainty within Iran’s political leadership as questions circulate around the role and visibility of Mojtaba Khamenei, who was recently reported to have assumed the position of supreme leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The situation comes amid stalled US-Iran peace negotiations and rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme.
According to a report citing US officials and aides from the Trump administration, the White House believes that the absence of clear and active leadership has contributed to internal fractures within Iran’s decision-making structure. Officials claim that divisions among Iranian leaders have complicated the negotiation process, particularly regarding the country’s nuclear enrichment activities and the authority given to its negotiating team.
Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile—estimated at around 440 kilograms enriched up to 60 per cent—remains a major point of contention in discussions. Analysts note that this level is close to weapons-grade material and could theoretically be sufficient for multiple nuclear devices if further enriched. This has heightened international concern and added pressure to diplomatic efforts aimed at restarting talks.

Experts quoted in international media reports suggest that Mojtaba Khamenei’s limited public presence may be affecting the clarity of leadership decisions. Ali Vaez of the International Crisis Group noted that it is unclear whether he is directly managing negotiations or merely approving broad strategic decisions, with operational choices potentially left to other officials within Iran’s political system.
Some analysts argue that the Iranian leadership may be deliberately maintaining ambiguity around Mojtaba Khamenei’s role. They suggest this could serve as a political buffer, shielding negotiators from domestic criticism while preserving flexibility in ongoing diplomatic engagements. Unlike his father, who was frequently seen addressing national issues publicly, Mojtaba Khamenei has not made any direct appearances or public statements since the reported transition.
Meanwhile, speculation continues over his health and whereabouts following reports of injuries sustained during earlier strikes, as well as claims that he may be participating in meetings remotely. Despite the uncertainty, some officials believe there remains a possibility that US-Iran negotiations could resume in the near future, although no clear timeline has been established for a new round of talks.
