An American diplomat, Brian Matthew Faughnan, vice consul at the US Consulate General in Monterrey, died in a car accident on Wednesday in Coahuila, northern Mexico. The vehicle he was traveling in overturned on a highway in Matamoros, according to the Coahuila Attorney General’s Office.
The US Consulate confirmed his death via a statement on its Facebook page Thursday. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the accident, but local media reported that the driver likely lost control, causing the vehicle to flip. Faughnan, 41, was traveling for a diplomatic meeting when the incident occurred.
