Tensions between Israel and Iran escalated sharply on Monday as renewed missile exchanges and airstrikes pushed the region closer to broader conflict, with the US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, reporting shelter conditions amid ongoing missile alerts across parts of the country. The latest escalation follows Israeli strikes on military targets inside Iran early Monday, which came in response to an Iranian missile attack on Israeli territory late Sunday.
The exchange marked another significant surge in hostilities between the two regional rivals, raising concerns of a wider confrontation in West Asia. During the heightened alert period, Ambassador Huckabee posted updates on social media platform X while taking shelter in Israel. He described hearing “loud booms overhead,” expressing hope that they were successful interceptions by air defence systems. In another post, he characterised the situation as one in which civilians were living under constant threat from Iranian missile fire.
Huckabee also wrote that missile warnings were activated in Jerusalem around 6:00 a.m., adding that incoming projectiles were intercepted. He strongly criticised Iran, accusing it of acting through aggression and proxy networks, and referred to the country in highly charged terms, reflecting the intensity of rhetoric accompanying the escalating conflict.

As missile alerts sounded across Israel, the Israeli military confirmed that its air force had carried out strikes on multiple targets inside Iran. Among the reported targets was a major industrial facility within a petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, located in southwestern Iran. The strikes were described as part of an ongoing response to earlier Iranian missile launches.
The situation has rapidly intensified with both countries continuing military operations against each other, while international concern grows over the risk of further escalation. With retaliatory strikes and missile interceptions continuing, the region remains on high alert as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict have yet to show visible progress.
