An oil tanker was struck by an "unknown projectile" and caught fire while sailing near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident occurred close to one of the world's most strategically important energy shipping corridors, prompting maritime authorities to advise vessels in the area to exercise heightened caution as investigations continue.

The UKMTO said the incident took place approximately eight nautical miles east of Limah, Oman. According to the agency, the tanker was travelling southbound when it was hit on its port side by an unidentified projectile, which ignited a fire onboard. The circumstances surrounding the strike were not immediately clear, and authorities have not identified the source of the projectile.

In an advisory posted on X, the UKMTO confirmed that there were no reports of casualties among the crew or any signs of environmental damage resulting from the incident. The agency did not disclose the identity or flag of the vessel involved but said the situation was under investigation. It also urged ships transiting the region to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to maritime security authorities.
