An oil tanker was struck by an "unknown projectile" and caught fire while sailing near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident occurred close to one of the world's most strategically important energy shipping corridors, prompting maritime authorities to advise vessels in the area to exercise heightened caution as investigations continue.
The UKMTO said the incident took place approximately eight nautical miles east of Limah, Oman. According to the agency, the tanker was travelling southbound when it was hit on its port side by an unidentified projectile, which ignited a fire onboard. The circumstances surrounding the strike were not immediately clear, and authorities have not identified the source of the projectile.
In an advisory posted on X, the UKMTO confirmed that there were no reports of casualties among the crew or any signs of environmental damage resulting from the incident. The agency did not disclose the identity or flag of the vessel involved but said the situation was under investigation. It also urged ships transiting the region to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to maritime security authorities.

The incident comes despite a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and continuing diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a more durable regional peace agreement. While tensions in the Gulf have eased in recent weeks, security concerns remain high in and around the Strait of Hormuz, where commercial vessels have previously been targeted during periods of heightened geopolitical friction.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's busiest maritime chokepoints, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes through the narrow waterway each day, making any security incident in the region a matter of international concern. Disruptions to shipping in the area can have implications for global energy markets and maritime trade.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the attack, and no group has claimed responsibility. The UKMTO has advised all vessels operating in the region to maintain heightened situational awareness while transiting the area. As the investigation progresses, maritime security agencies are expected to monitor developments closely to ensure the safety of commercial shipping along one of the world's most vital energy routes.
