A Ukrainian drone struck a multi-storey residential apartment building in Russia’s fourth-largest city, Yekaterinburg, on Saturday, marking what officials described as the first such attack on the city since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The incident occurred in a major urban center located around 1,900 kilometres from Kyiv.
Sverdlovsk region governor Denis Pasler confirmed the strike in a post on the Telegram messaging app. He stated that there were no fatalities reported in the incident, although several residents suffered minor injuries. According to him, one woman was hospitalised for treatment following the attack, while emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the site.
Authorities also said that residents of the affected apartment building were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Emergency services worked to secure the area and assess structural damage. The governor added that all relevant agencies were responding promptly to manage the aftermath and ensure public safety in the affected zone.

Visuals shared on social media platform X and verified by Reuters showed thick smoke rising from the upper floors of a modern high-rise building. The footage also indicated significant damage, including a heavily blackened façade and multiple windows blown out, suggesting a strong impact on the residential structure.
There was no immediate official response from Ukraine regarding the reported drone strike. The incident comes shortly after a major Russian overnight assault on Ukrainian territory, which reportedly killed seven people and left dozens injured, further intensifying cross-border attacks between the two countries.
Yekaterinburg, which has a population of about 1.5 million people, is a key industrial hub in Russia’s Ural region and hosts several defence-related manufacturing facilities. Since the start of the conflict in 2022, Russia and Ukraine have both carried out long-range strikes, with Moscow targeting Ukrainian cities using missiles and drones, while Kyiv has launched drone and sabotage operations deep inside Russian territory.
