A van driver in Thanet, Kent, has been praised by police after helping armed officers pursue and arrest a fleeing suspect by offering them an impromptu lift during a foot chase. The incident occurred around midday on June 16 after Kent Police responded to reports of a serious assault on High Street. As officers arrived at the scene, the suspect fled on foot toward Tivoli Road, prompting an immediate pursuit through the surrounding area.
Video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows one of the armed officers running after the suspect before a passing van driver stops to offer assistance. The driver invited the officer to get into the back of the van, allowing police to continue the chase more quickly. The unexpected intervention enabled officers to catch up with the suspect, who was arrested shortly afterwards without further incident.
Kent Police have commended the driver's actions, describing them as selfless and instrumental in ensuring the successful arrest. Armed Policing Superintendent Will Lay praised the driver's role in helping officers apprehend what he described as a violent offender. He said the suspect had been attempting to evade capture by running through a nearby park and was close to escaping the pursuing officers. According to Lay, the assistance provided by the van driver allowed officers to maintain the pursuit and ultimately make the arrest.
Police officials said the successful outcome highlighted the value of cooperation between emergency services and members of the public in appropriate circumstances. While officers are trained to handle dangerous situations, responsible assistance from bystanders can occasionally prove crucial in helping bring incidents to a safe conclusion. Authorities stressed that members of the public should always prioritise their own safety and follow police instructions during emergencies.
The viral footage has attracted widespread praise online, with many social media users applauding the driver's initiative and calm response. Kent Police said the motorist should be proud of his contribution to keeping the local community safe and thanked him for his assistance. The incident has since been highlighted as an example of how quick thinking and community spirit can support law enforcement during critical operations.
