British authorities have charged a 32-year-old man with 10 counts of attempted murder following a stabbing spree aboard a London-bound train on Saturday evening. Anthony Williams, from Peterborough in central England, appeared in court on Monday after British Transport Police (BTP) arrested him at the scene. In addition to the train attack, Williams faces separate charges of attempted murder and knife possession stemming from an earlier incident in London on the same day, along with actual bodily harm related to the railway assault.
The attack unfolded shortly after 6:30 p.m. on a Greater Anglia service travelling from Stansted Airport to London's Liverpool Street station. Witnesses described chaos as Williams allegedly brandished a knife and began slashing passengers in a carriage. BTP officers, already on board due to an unrelated call, intervened swiftly, tasering and restraining the suspect. Ten victims were rushed to hospitals across Essex and London; four were treated for minor injuries and discharged overnight, while others sustained lacerations requiring stitches or surgery. No fatalities were reported, and police have ruled out terrorism as a motive.
Williams was remanded in custody following his initial appearance at Colchester Magistrates' Court. He is scheduled to appear via video link at Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday. Prosecutors highlighted his prior convictions, though details remain sealed. The charges carry potential life sentences under UK law, reflecting the severity of targeting multiple victims in a confined public space. BTP commended the responding officers' actions, crediting their presence with preventing further harm.
