The United Kingdom is set to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation and impose sanctions on the paramilitary force, citing growing concerns over hostile activities linked to Iran on British soil. The proposed measures come amid a rise in antisemitic incidents and alleged threats against Iranian dissidents, journalists and activists residing in the UK. British authorities say the move is intended to strengthen national security and counter foreign state-backed activities.

According to British officials, the IRGC and groups linked to it have been associated with a series of suspected hostile operations in the United Kingdom, including alleged bombing plots and assassination attempts targeting individuals perceived as opponents of the Iranian regime. The government believes the designation will provide law enforcement agencies with broader legal powers to investigate, disrupt and prosecute activities connected to organisations considered a threat to public safety and national security.

In addition to the proposed designation of the IRGC, the UK government plans to outlaw an Islamist militant group that has claimed responsibility for several antisemitic attacks. Authorities allege the group was behind the arson attack on four Jewish community ambulances in north London and had also planned attacks on Jewish-linked locations, including the Israeli Embassy. Officials have described these incidents as part of a broader pattern of extremist activity requiring a stronger legal response.

In a statement issued on Monday, the UK Home Office said the new designations would improve the country's ability to protect itself from foreign state-backed threats. The department stated that individuals carrying out acts of sabotage, including arson, on behalf of the designated organisations could face life imprisonment under the strengthened legal framework. The measures are aimed at deterring hostile operations and enhancing the government's capacity to respond to national security risks.

The proposed action reflects the UK's increasing focus on countering foreign influence operations and protecting vulnerable communities from targeted attacks. Authorities have repeatedly warned about the risks posed by transnational repression, espionage and politically motivated violence linked to overseas actors. The latest measures also underscore Britain's commitment to addressing antisemitic violence and safeguarding individuals who may be at risk because of their political views, ethnicity or religion.

If formally implemented, the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organisation would represent one of the UK's most significant actions against Iran in recent years.
