British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with former US President Donald Trump following the dramatic interception of the Russian-linked oil tanker Bella 1 in the North Atlantic. Downing Street described the discussion as a review of the joint operation, progress on Ukraine, and cooperation on global security initiatives. The call highlighted the UK’s behind-the-scenes role in supporting US enforcement actions.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the UK provided “enabling support”, including Royal Air Force surveillance and naval assistance from the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship RFA Tideforce. Defence Secretary John Healey stressed that the operation was fully in line with international law and part of ongoing efforts to combat sanctions-busting activities across the globe.
The tanker, recently renamed Marinera, has a history of evasive tactics, including false flags and disabling tracking systems. According to UK officials, it was part of a shadow fleet network transporting oil for Russian and Iranian interests, with alleged links to financing extremist groups and conflicts in multiple regions.

Healey praised the operation in Parliament, noting that UK forces acted professionally and seamlessly, despite no direct boarding of the vessel. The mission demonstrated the depth of the UK-US defence relationship and showcased London’s willingness to take an active role in protecting global economic and security interests.
The interception comes amid wider efforts to reduce Russia’s oil revenues, which have reportedly dropped significantly over the past few months due to sanctions and enforcement operations. London framed the action as essential to disrupting networks that threaten national and international security.
Officials noted that this operation signals a more assertive posture on the high seas, where shadow fleets and illicit shipping pose growing challenges. By aiding the US in seizing the vessel, the UK aims to reinforce its stance against illegal maritime activity while safeguarding its strategic and economic interests.
