US President Donald Trump's reported decision to secretly switch aircraft during a July trip from Turkey to Britain differed from previous covert presidential journeys because his location was allegedly concealed even from members of the press pool travelling with him. Historians and presidential security experts cited in reports said US presidents have previously used unmarked or decoy aircraft and secret travel arrangements to protect themselves in dangerous locations. However, Trump's movements during the Turkey trip remained undisclosed for weeks, making the episode unusual even by the standards of presidential security operations.

The incident followed a NATO summit in Turkey, where Trump had arrived aboard a luxury Boeing 747 donated by Qatar. According to the account, Trump's security team arranged for him to leave the aircraft without being detected and travel across the airport inside a catering container before boarding another presidential aircraft. Meanwhile, Air Force One, carrying White House officials, security and support personnel as well as journalists travelling with the president, reportedly departed without Trump. The aircraft effectively served as a decoy in case Iran attempted to act on what was described as a credible threat against the US president.

The unusual arrangement became even more striking when Trump later travelled to Britain. After making the journey separately from the press travelling with him, he reportedly rejoined the presidential aircraft without the journalists knowing where he had been. When reporters questioned him about the potential danger surrounding the trip, Trump appeared to dismiss concerns over his security. “If I go, you go. Right?” he told reporters. His remark, however, did not address the fact that the president had not actually been aboard the aircraft that had initially departed Turkey with the press pool and other personnel.

Presidents have previously made secret overseas trips, particularly when travelling to active conflict zones or locations where security threats were considered unusually high. Such journeys have involved classified schedules, undisclosed routes and aircraft arrangements designed to prevent hostile groups from determining the president's location. Former presidents Bill Clinton and Joe Biden have also undertaken highly secretive trips during their time in office. Security officials have at times relied on unmarked aircraft or alternative transportation to reduce the possibility of an attack or to prevent an adversary from accurately tracking the president's movements.

Garrett M. Graff, author of “Raven Rock: The Story of the U.S. Government's Secret Plan to Save Itself - While the Rest of Us Die,” said presidents had previously flown on unmarked or decoy aircraft during visits to Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations resembling war zones. However, Graff said Trump's Turkey episode appeared different because the secrecy continued after the president had reached safety. “But this was an ongoing secret that I don't think we've ever seen before,” he said. The distinction lies not simply in the use of a decoy aircraft, but in the fact that Trump's whereabouts were reportedly hidden from the journalists accompanying him and remained unknown to the public for an extended period.

The security concerns surrounding the Turkey departure were heightened by the aircraft Trump had used to arrive at the NATO summit. The luxury jet gifted by Qatar was reportedly not equipped with some of the same missile detection and countermeasure systems available on older US presidential aircraft. That difference in defensive capabilities was significant given the reported threat from Iran. The decision to separate Trump from the aircraft carrying the press and White House personnel therefore reflected an unusually high level of caution. While presidential security operations are frequently kept confidential to protect the president, the Turkey flight stood out because the deception extended to the president's own travelling press pool and remained concealed well after the journey had ended.
