US President Donald Trump moved to project strong ties with India at the G7 summit on Wednesday, lavishing praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi despite heightened diplomatic tensions over trade disputes and a recent US military strike in the Gulf of Oman that killed three Indian mariners. During their bilateral interaction on the sidelines of the summit, Trump dismissed suggestions of friction between Washington and New Delhi, repeatedly describing Modi as a close ally and a “tough negotiator.”
The meeting took place amid a sensitive geopolitical backdrop involving strained trade relations, energy security concerns, and India’s formal protest over the maritime incident. The recent strike on a tanker in the Gulf of Oman, which resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors, has added strain to bilateral ties. The Indian government has raised concerns over the safety of its seafarers operating in conflict-prone waters, while discussions at the G7 summit included broader maritime security issues in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding regions.
Despite these tensions, Trump sought to emphasize continuity and strength in the US-India relationship. He said there was “no daylight” between him and Modi, adding that their partnership remained solid at both personal and national levels. According to reports from the meeting, Trump also expressed optimism about ongoing trade negotiations and suggested that both sides were close to finalizing agreements on key economic issues. The US president further highlighted his personal rapport with Modi, describing him as a “loyal friend” and reiterating admiration for his negotiating style.

His remarks come at a time when both countries are attempting to manage multiple areas of disagreement, including tariffs imposed by Washington on Indian goods and New Delhi’s continued energy imports from Russia, which have been a sticking point in bilateral talks. At the same time, the G7 discussions also touched on broader regional security concerns, with Modi reportedly stressing the need to ensure safe maritime routes and protect seafarers working in global shipping lanes.
Trump, for his part, acknowledged the issue and signaled willingness to address concerns raised by India during ongoing diplomatic and trade engagements. The exchange underscores a familiar pattern in US-India relations under both leaders: public displays of strong personal chemistry alongside underlying strategic disagreements. While the latest meeting projected unity and cooperation, analysts note that key disputes over trade, energy policy, and regional security remain unresolved and will likely shape the next phase of negotiations between the two governments.
