U.S. President Donald Trump claimed ignorance about American imports of Russian uranium, fertilizers, and chemicals during a White House press conference, responding to India’s accusations of U.S. hypocrisy.
“I don’t know anything about it. I’d have to check,” Trump said, addressing India’s claim that the U.S. imports uranium hexafluoride, palladium, fertilizers, and chemicals from Russia while criticizing New Delhi’s Russian oil purchases. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called U.S. tariff threats “unjustified and unreasonable,” noting that Europe-Russia trade in 2024 reached €67.5 billion, surpassing India’s trade volume with Russia.
Trump, who announced plans to “substantially raise” tariffs on India for buying and reselling Russian oil, reiterated his stance at an event signing an executive order for a 2028 Los Angeles Olympics Task Force. He also repeated an unverified claim of stopping an India-Pakistan war, among others, while expressing intent to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
India clarified that its ceasefire with Pakistan resulted from direct military talks. State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized Trump’s focus on nations “facilitating” the Ukraine war, hinting at potential secondary sanctions.
