A catastrophic explosion tore through the Mariyammal Firecracker Factory in Naranapuram, near Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district, on July 21, 2025, claiming the lives of three workers and leaving three others critically injured. The blast, which occurred on Monday afternoon, has sent shockwaves through the local community, a hub for India’s firecracker industry.
Authorities have launched a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion, which remains unclear. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and the injured were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Sivakasi, often called the "Firecracker Capital of India," has faced similar tragedies in the past due to the hazardous nature of the industry. Police and local officials are now reviewing safety protocols at the factory to prevent future incidents.
