A Punjab Police assistant sub-inspector was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Saturday morning while travelling to duty near Amritsar, prompting heightened concern over law and order in the state. The deceased officer was identified as Joga Singh, son of Pyara Singh and a resident of Ghaniye Ke Bangar village in Gurdaspur district. He was serving with the traffic police unit in Amritsar at the time of the incident.
According to preliminary police information, the attack took place around 6:45 am near Hamza village under the jurisdiction of Majitha police station in Amritsar Rural. Joga Singh was reportedly riding his two-wheeler towards Amritsar city when unknown attackers allegedly intercepted him and opened fire. Officials said the officer suffered multiple bullet injuries during the attack.
Police stated that the ASI died on the spot before emergency assistance could arrive. The area was immediately cordoned off following the shooting, and senior officers reached the location to supervise the investigation. Forensic teams were also deployed to collect evidence and examine the crime scene for ballistic and other forensic clues that could help identify the attackers.

Confirming the incident, senior police officials said investigators are examining several possible motives behind the killing. These include personal enmity, a targeted attack linked to the officer’s professional duties, and the possibility of a road rage-related confrontation. Authorities have begun reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas and are also gathering witness statements to trace the suspects involved in the shooting.
The killing has triggered political reactions in Punjab, with opposition leaders questioning the state’s security situation and demanding swift arrests. The incident has once again drawn attention to concerns surrounding violent crime and attacks on police personnel in the border state. Officials, however, assured that multiple police teams have been formed to investigate the case from all possible angles.
Punjab Police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the murder. Senior officers said efforts are underway to identify the assailants and determine whether the attack was pre-planned.
