A suicide bombing struck an anti-militant peace rally in Pakistan’s Swat Valley on Sunday, August 2, killing at least 17 people and injuring more than two dozen others, according to officials. Most of those killed were reported to be civilians and police personnel.
The explosion occurred in Kabal, a town in Swat Valley, where demonstrators had gathered near a police station to demand peace and stability in the region. Participants were raising slogans against militancy when the attacker targeted the gathering, turning the public demonstration into a scene of casualties and panic.
The event, known as the Swat Peace Rally, was organised by the Swat Aman Jirga, a local tribal council. Such demonstrations have become an important form of public mobilisation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sometimes attracting thousands of residents seeking stronger government action against militancy and recurring violence.

The attack has drawn renewed attention to the difficult security situation in Pakistan’s northwestern province. Police officers were seen guarding the site while investigators examined the area following the explosion. The available report did not identify the attacker or state whether any organisation had claimed responsibility for the bombing. Authorities were yet to provide further details about the investigation or the condition of those wounded.
The Kabal bombing comes amid a difficult year for Pakistan’s internal security, marked by violence and civilian casualties. By attacking a gathering specifically organised to demand peace, the bombing has underscored the risks faced by communities publicly opposing militancy and the continuing security challenges confronting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
