Smoke was seen rising from the Crowne Plaza Manama, a five-star hotel complex in Bahrain, amid Iran’s retaliatory strikes following the US–Israeli attack that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Videos circulating on social media show thick clouds of smoke enveloping the building, though it remains unclear whether the damage was caused by a direct missile or drone hit or by debris from intercepted projectiles.
The incident comes as Iran vowed to avenge Khamenei’s death, launching missiles across several Gulf regions, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar. Earlier on Sunday, Bahrain’s Interior Ministry reported that a drone targeted Bahrain International Airport, causing material damage but no casualties. Authorities moved quickly to secure the site and assess the situation.
“Targeting of Bahrain International Airport with a drone, resulting in material damage without loss of life, at a time when the relevant authorities are initiating procedures to secure the site,” the ministry stated on X (formerly Twitter).

The escalation follows a missile attack on the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain on Saturday. The National Communication Centre confirmed that “The Fifth Fleet’s service centre was subjected to a missile attack. We will provide you with details later,” underscoring the heightened tensions in the region.
Eyewitnesses at the Crowne Plaza Manama reported seeing smoke rising from the hotel, though no casualties have been confirmed. Officials are continuing to investigate the cause and assess the extent of the damage.
The attacks have intensified fears over the safety of civilian and strategic locations across the Gulf, prompting heightened security measures in Bahrain and neighbouring countries as the US–Israel–Iran conflict escalates.
