A chilling mass grave uncovered in Sri Lanka’s northern Jaffna peninsula has sparked urgent calls from the country’s main Tamil party for the government to “uncover the truth” and bring those responsible to justice.
The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) sent a powerful letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Friday demanding swift action and internationally supervised forensic investigations at the Chemmani excavation site, where over 40 skeletons—including infants—have been unearthed.
“This isn’t just a grave—it’s clear evidence of war crimes and a genocidal campaign against the Tamil people,” ITAK declared, referring to the bloody civil war that ended in 2009 with the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The site, previously investigated in 1999 when 15 skeletons were found, was officially declared a mass grave by the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court earlier this year after new skeletal remains were discovered during redevelopment work.
The Tamil party insists that forensic experts from around the world be brought in to ensure transparency and justice for the thousands of victims caught in decades of brutal conflict that claimed tens of thousands of lives.
