A federal immigration officer fatally shot a 26-year-old Colombian man during a deportation enforcement operation in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday, marking the second deadly use of force involving US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel within a week. Authorities said the shooting occurred after the man allegedly attempted to flee in his vehicle during the operation. The incident is now under investigation by multiple agencies, including the Maine Attorney General's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
According to Senator Angus King of Maine, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him the officer fired after the man used his vehicle in a manner that posed a threat to law enforcement officers. King said the secretary described the vehicle as having been "weaponized" during the encounter. The operation took place in Biddeford, a coastal city of about 23,000 residents located roughly 15 miles (24 kilometres) southwest of Portland. Officials have not disclosed additional details about how the confrontation unfolded or whether any officers were injured during the incident.
The Maine Attorney General's Office, which is leading the investigation alongside the FBI and other law enforcement agencies, said preliminary information indicates the motorist was attempting to flee in the direction of an ICE agent when the fatal shot was fired. The office said the man was the subject of an immigration enforcement operation linked to a final order of removal, meaning authorities were seeking to deport him under an existing legal order. As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the ICE agent who discharged the weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Neither ICE nor the Maine Department of Public Safety immediately responded to requests for comment following the incident.

Immigrant advocacy organisations, including the Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition and Presente!, identified the deceased as a 26-year-old native of Colombia. The groups said he was legally authorised to work in the United States and possessed a valid Social Security number. They expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the shooting and called for a transparent and independent investigation into the use of deadly force. Authorities have not yet publicly released the man's identity, pending official notification procedures and the ongoing investigation.
The fatal shooting comes amid heightened scrutiny of immigration enforcement operations and the use of force by federal officers. It is the second incident in a week in which ICE personnel have used deadly force, prompting renewed attention from lawmakers, advocacy groups and civil rights organisations.
