Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest air travel hubs, faced severe disruption on Wednesday as extreme weather forced the cancellation of at least 700 flights. Heavy snow and strong winds have compounded travel chaos following several days of weather-related delays, affecting thousands of passengers across the continent.
The airport reported that more than 1,000 travellers were stranded overnight due to flight cancellations. Schiphol authorities set up camp beds and provided breakfast to passengers who had to spend the night at the terminal, emphasizing efforts to ensure safety and basic comfort during the disruption.
Officials warned that the number of cancellations could increase as the day progresses, depending on weather conditions. Passengers have been advised to check their flight status before travelling to the airport, as operations remain highly unpredictable due to persistent snow and wind.

Airlines operating at Schiphol have urged travellers to remain flexible and expect delays, with some flights being rescheduled or rerouted. The cancellations have also triggered knock-on effects at connecting European airports, disrupting travel plans for international and domestic travellers alike.
Airport authorities have deployed additional staff to manage crowds and provide updates to passengers. Emergency measures, including temporary sleeping arrangements and food provisions, have been activated to accommodate the stranded travellers.
Weather experts have forecast continued snow and gusty winds throughout the day, raising concerns about further disruptions. Schiphol Airport and local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging passengers to exercise caution and plan ahead while travel conditions remain unstable.
