Russia launched a massive overnight drone and missile attack on Kyiv, killing two, including a 12-year-old, and injuring 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported. The assault, one of the largest in months, struck hours before a UK- and Germany-led NATO meeting to discuss US President Donald Trump’s weapons plan for Ukraine.
The attack, lasting from midnight to 6 a.m., rattled Kyiv with machine gun fire, drone engines, and explosions, setting a kindergarten, supermarket, and warehouses ablaze. Ukraine’s air force reported 426 Shahed and decoy drones and 24 missiles, intercepting 200 drones and jamming or losing 203 others.
The strike highlights Ukraine’s urgent need for air defenses as Russia escalates long-range attacks. Trump’s plan, announced last week, involves NATO allies sending American weapons, including Patriot systems, though deliveries are yet to start. Germany offered to finance two Patriot systems, and Switzerland will redirect five, but setup may take days or weeks.

At Monday’s Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting, UK Defense Secretary John Healey will push for a “50-day drive” to rush aid, following Trump’s 50-day ceasefire ultimatum to Russia. NATO continues coordinating other aid, like ammunition, despite a brief US pause.
Zelenskyy proposed new peace talks this week, likely in Istanbul, though Russia has not confirmed a date, prioritizing its strategic goals. The attack, the first major strike since Trump’s envoy visited Kyiv, underscores the escalating conflict and Ukraine’s need for Western support.
