Ukraine launched one of its largest drone offensives since the beginning of the war, targeting multiple Russian regions overnight in a coordinated aerial assault that Russian authorities said involved nearly 600 drones. According to Russia’s Defence Ministry, the attacks struck at least 14 regions, including areas surrounding Moscow, as well as territories near the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. Russian officials confirmed that at least four people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured during the strikes, marking another major escalation in the long-running conflict between the two countries.

Russian authorities stated that air defence systems intercepted the majority of the drones during the overnight operation. The Defence Ministry claimed that 556 drones were shot down before dawn, while another 30 were neutralised later in the morning. Officials said the Moscow region was among the hardest hit, with three fatalities reported there, while another death occurred in the Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border. Emergency teams were deployed across several affected areas as authorities assessed damage to infrastructure and civilian property.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the operation and described the attacks as retaliation for recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities and communities. Zelenskyy said some drones travelled more than 500 kilometres and managed to penetrate Russian air defence systems near Moscow. He argued that Ukraine’s actions were justified responses to continued Russian military operations and warned that Kyiv would continue intensifying drone warfare if attacks on Ukrainian territory persisted. The Ukrainian leader also referenced recent Russian assaults that reportedly killed over 20 people and injured dozens across Ukraine in recent days.

The latest offensive reflects the growing importance of drone warfare in the conflict, which has evolved significantly since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than four years ago. Both countries have increasingly relied on long-range drones to target military sites, fuel depots, energy infrastructure, and strategic positions deep inside enemy territory. Analysts say advances in drone technology have transformed the battlefield by allowing lower-cost precision attacks capable of bypassing traditional defence systems. The strikes near Moscow also underscore Ukraine’s expanding ability to conduct operations far beyond front-line areas.

The escalation comes amid continuing international concern over the humanitarian and geopolitical consequences of the war. Western nations have continued supporting Ukraine with military and financial aid, while Russia has accused NATO countries of indirectly fuelling the conflict through arms supplies and intelligence cooperation. Diplomatic efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire have repeatedly stalled, with both sides maintaining hardline positions on territorial and security issues. Meanwhile, civilians in both Ukraine and Russian border regions continue to face disruptions, casualties, and uncertainty as the conflict enters another intense phase.

Military observers believe the latest wave of attacks could trigger further retaliatory operations in the coming weeks, particularly as both nations seek strategic advantages before any potential negotiations emerge. The use of hundreds of drones in a single coordinated strike demonstrates the increasing scale and sophistication of aerial warfare being employed by both sides. Security experts warn that continued escalation could further destabilise the wider region and increase risks to global energy, trade, and diplomatic stability. Despite periodic discussions about peace initiatives, the conflict remains deeply entrenched with no immediate resolution in sight.
