US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi during his official four-day visit to India, extending an invitation from US President Donald Trump for the Prime Minister to visit the White House in the near future. The high-level meeting focused on strengthening the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and expanding cooperation across key strategic sectors.
According to official statements, Prime Minister Modi welcomed Rubio and held discussions on advancing bilateral ties, with a particular focus on regional stability, global security, and shared economic interests. Rubio’s visit began earlier in the day in Kolkata, where he arrived for his first trip to India as US Secretary of State. He was received by Ambassador Gor at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport and later visited Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Saint Teresa. His visit is part of a broader diplomatic itinerary spanning Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi from May 23 to 26.
The visit carries additional significance as it comes ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled in New Delhi on May 26, which will bring together representatives from India, the United States, Australia, and Japan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will host the meeting, with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi also expected to attend. Discussions are likely to focus on maritime security, energy cooperation, and supply chain resilience.
Officials from both countries indicated that Rubio’s visit is expected to further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
