Russian President Vladimir Putin labeled U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites as “unjustified” and warned they risk pushing the world toward a major war. Meeting Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in the Kremlin, Putin pledged to help the Iranian people but offered no specifics on Russia’s support.
The talks, attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and GRU chief Igor Kostyukov, followed U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Putin criticized the “unprovoked aggression,” while Araqchi reportedly delivered a letter from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei seeking greater Russian backing, though Moscow did not confirm this.
Iran has expressed frustration with Russia’s limited support, sources said, urging Putin to take a stronger stance against Israel and the U.S. Putin later told military recruits that “extra-regional powers” were escalating the Mideast conflict, avoiding direct mention of the U.S. but warning of a “dangerous line.”
