Amid reports of internal dissent within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), a group of party MPs met in the national capital on Monday to discuss their future political course, including the possibility of forming a separate faction, according to leaders present at the meeting. The meeting was attended by former TMC Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, who resigned from both the Upper House and the party earlier in the day, along with several Lok Sabha MPs, including Prasun Banerjee, Sharmila Sarkar, Jagadish Chandra Basunia, Kalipada Saren Kherwal and Arup Chakraborty.
The discussions reportedly focused on the evolving political situation within the party and the group’s next steps in Parliament. Speaking to reporters after meeting Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, Ray confirmed that he had formally submitted his resignation from the Upper House. He also said he had informed TMC chief Mamata Banerjee of his decision through WhatsApp and email, marking an official end to his long association with the party.
“I have informed Mamata Banerjee of my decision to quit the party through WhatsApp and email,” Ray said, adding that his resignation was based on personal conviction rather than coordinated political strategy. The developments come amid wider political churn within the TMC in West Bengal, where reports suggest that a section of MLAs have formed a separate group in the state Assembly. This has fuelled speculation that internal divisions within the party may be extending from the state legislature to the national parliamentary wing.

Ray, however, distanced his resignation from the developments in the Assembly, stating that his decision was independent. He noted that while the MLAs had not formally quit the party, he had chosen to step down entirely, even though his Rajya Sabha term was scheduled to continue until 2029. He said he made the decision on principle, citing difficulties in continuing within the party structure.
Meanwhile, political activity in Delhi was further heightened as TMC leaders, including party chief Mamata Banerjee and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, participated in a meeting of the INDIA bloc. The opposition alliance meeting also brought together senior leaders from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, RJD, National Conference, PDP, and Left parties, where discussions reportedly centred on coordination and democratic governance issues. While opposition leaders projected unity at the broader alliance level, the internal developments within the TMC continue to draw attention, with no official statement yet from the party leadership regarding the reported meetings of its MPs.
