Prince Harry honored his late mother, Princess Diana, by walking through an active landmine field in Angola on Wednesday, supporting the Halo Trust’s mission to clear explosives from war-torn areas. Wearing a flak jacket, Harry followed Diana’s 1997 footsteps, when her iconic walk in Angola boosted global support for a landmine ban treaty ratified that year, months before her death in a Paris car crash.
Visiting a minefield near Cuito Cuanavale, Harry, who joined Halo Trust for a similar campaign in 2019, highlighted the persistent threat of landmines from Angola’s 1975-2002 civil war. Halo Trust reports over 60,000 casualties since 2008, having cleared 120,000 landmines and 100,000 explosives since 1994, with 1,000 minefields still remaining.
Harry’s walk underscores his commitment to his mother’s advocacy, raising awareness for a mine-free future.
