Pope Leo, during his return flight from a four-nation Africa tour, has said that sexual ethics should not be the central issue determining unity or division within the Catholic Church. The remarks come amid ongoing global debates within the 1.4 billion-member Church over issues such as LGBTQ inclusion, marriage, and moral teachings.
The pontiff stated that the Church should place greater emphasis on broader concerns such as justice, equality, and peace rather than focusing primarily on sexual matters. He added that prioritising sexual ethics in Church debates could create division rather than unity among believers across different regions and communities.
Pope Leo’s comments were made in response to questions regarding blessings for same-sex couples. He expressed support for a 2023 decision by the late Pope Francis that allowed informal, case-by-case blessings for same-sex couples outside formal liturgical settings. However, he indicated that he does not favour expanding or formalising such practices further.

The Pope further said that the Church must carefully consider which issues require priority, suggesting that global challenges such as war, authoritarianism, and social inequality demand more urgent attention. His remarks were viewed by several Church observers as a shift in emphasis within Vatican discourse on moral and social teachings.
Religious scholars and advocacy groups noted that the statement signals a potential rebalancing of priorities within the global Church. Experts described it as a “prudential judgment” that places social justice issues on equal or higher footing than debates surrounding sexual ethics, which have historically been central to Church teachings.
Reactions from LGBTQ-supportive Catholic groups were largely positive, with some describing the remarks as a long-awaited recognition of broader social concerns within Church priorities. Analysts also compared the moment to earlier landmark statements by Pope Francis, suggesting that Pope Leo may be shaping a similar tone of pastoral openness while maintaining doctrinal continuity.
