Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Micron Technology’s state-of-the-art Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on Saturday, marking a major milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing journey. The US-based company has invested Rs 22,516 crore in the plant, which is expected to strengthen India’s position in global technology supply chains.
The Sanand ATMP facility will manufacture solid-state drives (SSD), dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), and NAND flash memory products, which are widely used in computing, smartphones, servers, data centres, and other electronics. Once fully operational, the plant will feature approximately 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, making it one of the world’s largest raised-floor cleanrooms.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the significance of the inauguration for India-US relations, stating that the plant “reflects deep Indo-US partnership.” He emphasized the strategic importance of microchips in the 21st century, saying, “If oil was regulator of the last century, microchips will be the regulator of this century.”

The Prime Minister also underscored the global importance of secure supply chains for emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and semiconductors. He said India and the United States, the world’s two largest democracies, are collaborating to make supply chains of critical minerals more secure and reliable, reflecting broader technological and strategic cooperation.
Currently, the plant employs around 2,000 workers, with direct employment expected to rise to 5,000 as operations expand. Micron officials noted that the facility also provides opportunities for specially-abled employees and skilled workers from diverse sections of society, emphasizing inclusive workforce development.
As an ATMP facility, the plant receives semiconductor wafers from Micron’s global fabrication units. These wafers are assembled into functional chips, tested for performance and memory capacity, marked with essential specifications, and packaged for domestic and international markets. Officials said the facility will serve customers worldwide, contributing to India’s growing role in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
