The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed on Friday that 2,417 Indian citizens have been deported or repatriated from the United States since January this year. The statement was made by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a press briefing in response to a query regarding India’s stance on migration issues.
Jaiswal emphasized India’s commitment to fostering legal migration pathways while taking a strong stand against illegal migration. “We want to promote legal pathways for migration. At the same time, India stands against illegal migration,” he stated. The deportations highlight the challenges faced by Indian nationals attempting to reside in the US without proper documentation, reflecting stricter enforcement of immigration policies by US authorities.
The MEA has not provided specific reasons for the deportations, which could range from visa violations and overstaying to other immigration-related issues. However, the significant number of deportations underscores the growing scrutiny of illegal migration globally. India has consistently advocated for safe and legal migration channels, working with international partners to ensure fair treatment of its citizens abroad.
