One person was killed and eight others injured after Russia launched an overnight attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, involving ballistic missiles, according to local authorities. The assault began around 1:30 a.m. local time and continued for several hours, with explosions reported across multiple parts of the city. Emergency services responded to fires and damage caused by the strikes as residents were affected in several districts.
The attack triggered fires in five districts of Kyiv, damaging residential buildings, office complexes, industrial facilities, a dormitory, and vehicles, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. Rescue teams worked through the night to control fires and assist people trapped in affected buildings. In the Sviatoshynskyi district, emergency workers rescued four people from a burning private home, while residents were also evacuated from a damaged three-storey building in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
Authorities said a fire at a non-residential building was brought under control, while additional emergency operations were carried out in the Solomyanskyi, Desnianskyi, and Dnipro districts. One person was later found dead during rescue efforts. Officials have not provided further details about the identity of the victim or the full extent of the damage caused by the missile strikes.

The latest attack comes as Kyiv faces repeated large-scale Russian strikes in recent weeks. Ukraine has been relying heavily on Western-supplied air defence systems, including Patriot missile systems, which are considered among the country’s most effective tools for intercepting ballistic missile threats. Ukrainian officials have warned that shortages of interceptor missiles could make defending major cities more challenging.
US President Donald Trump has said he is willing to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptor missiles under licensing arrangements, a move that could strengthen Kyiv’s ability to respond to missile attacks. However, details regarding the implementation, production timeline, and practical impact of the proposal remain unclear. Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities continue as the conflict enters another period of heightened military activity.
