Odisha is grappling with relentless heavy rainfall triggered by a fresh low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, formed early Tuesday morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system is set to intensify, bringing more downpours across the state over the next four days.
The IMD has warned of rough sea conditions, advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the waters along Odisha’s coast until September 3. The low-pressure system, which emerged at 5:30 AM on September 2, is expected to strengthen and move west-northwestwards across Odisha within the next 48 hours.
Coastal Odisha has been battered by heavy rain since Monday night, disrupting daily life. In Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, waterlogging has inundated urban areas, causing chaos for residents. In Malkangiri, a flooded bridge at Kangurkonda has severed road connectivity to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded, according to a Revenue Department official.

The IMD issued an 'Orange' warning for Malkangiri and Koraput, predicting heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph. A 'Yellow' warning was issued for Koraput, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sundargarh, Bargarh, and Jharsuguda, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in isolated areas. Light to moderate rain is forecast for 22 other districts.
As Odisha braces for more wet weather, authorities are on high alert to manage the impacts of flooding and disruptions across the state.
