A tragic incident unfolded in Dharwad, Karnataka, where Bibek (40), a Nepali worker at a local momo outlet, was found dead on Saturday morning due to a suspected respiratory issue. Six of his colleagues—Naresh (45), Nitesh (18), DKshi (40), Sudhan (30), Kumar (50), and Laxman (30)—were rushed to Dharwad Civil Hospital, with three in critical condition. The group, all from Nepal, lived and worked together at the Chings Changs momo shop near KC Park in Sai Darshini Layout. Hubballi-Dharwad police commissioner N. Shashikumar confirmed an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.
The victims resided in a small house on the Vidyagiri border, sharing close quarters while operating the outlet. Owner Yogeeta discovered the emergency when none reported for work Saturday morning; she found Bibek deceased and the others unconscious. Acting swiftly, she transported them to the hospital in her vehicle. Bibek had reportedly prepared to travel back to Nepal via Hubballi, adding a heartbreaking layer to the loss. Police arrived promptly after a tip from Vidyagiri station.
Commissioner Shashikumar personally inspected the site and visited the hospital to assess the patients' conditions. He noted the room was completely sealed with no ventilation equipment like gas cylinders present. The group had grilled non-vegetarian food using charcoal the previous Friday night, raising strong suspicions of carbon monoxide suffocation. Initial checks revealed no signs of food poisoning, but forensic analysis is pending.

Authorities emphasized the dangers of indoor charcoal use in poorly ventilated spaces, a common practice in small eateries. The six survivors are receiving intensive care, with doctors monitoring for similar toxic exposure symptoms. Shashikumar urged shop owners to install proper exhaust systems and avoid enclosed cooking. The investigation will include post-mortem results and toxicology reports to rule out other factors.
This incident highlights vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers in informal food sectors, prompting calls for stricter safety regulations. Dharwad Civil Hospital staff reported the patients stabilized somewhat, but the critical trio remains under observation. Police continue gathering statements from the owner and locals. Updates on the probe are expected soon as officials piece together the fateful night.
