In a symbolic gesture blending diplomacy and environmental consciousness, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met King Charles III at Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England, on July 24, 2025, presenting a tree sapling as part of his “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative. The sapling, a Davidia involucrata ‘Sonoma’—known as the Sonoma dove tree or handkerchief tree for its stunning white bracts resembling doves or handkerchiefs—will be planted this autumn, symbolizing a shared commitment to sustainability.
The meeting, described by Modi as “very good” in a post on X, covered critical aspects of India-UK relations, including the newly signed Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and Vision 2035. Discussions also touched on education, health, and wellness, with a focus on Yoga and Ayurveda—topics close to King Charles’s heart. “We explored environmental protection and sustainability, alongside trade and investment opportunities,” Modi noted.
Buckingham Palace highlighted the eco-friendly gift, stating, “The tree, inspired by the Prime Minister’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, honors mothers through environmental stewardship.” The Sonoma dove tree, unlike its species, blooms within two to three years, offering a vibrant display in late spring.

Modi’s packed UK visit included bilateral talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, where the historic CETA was signed, promising to boost trade and investment. “This agreement marks a pivotal step in strengthening our economic partnership,” Modi said, noting an exhibition showcasing India-UK economic ties.
Beyond diplomacy, Modi celebrated cultural connections, engaging with Buckinghamshire Street Cricket Hubs and gifting a bat signed by India’s T20 World Cup-winning team. He also admired a Premier League trophy, acknowledging football’s growing popularity among Indian youth.
As Modi concluded his UK visit, he departed for the Maldives, where he will be the Guest of Honour at the nation’s Independence Day celebrations, marking the next leg of his two-nation tour.
