Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited Kobe, Japan, on Tuesday to meet 27 nurses from the state thriving in hospitals like Kobe Kaisei under the Mission Moon initiative. Launched in March 2023 by the Meghalaya State Skills Development Society (MSSDS), this flagship program targets placing 100 healthcare professionals in countries facing a global shortage of over 13 million nurses. This second batch, following an August 2023 job fair in Shillong with over 1,300 applicants, joins 18 nurses in Singapore, with 30 more training for Germany.
Sangma, accompanied by Health and Family Welfare officials, praised the nurses’ adaptability, stating, “This is about changing lives and unlocking global potential. Our youth represent Meghalaya with excellence.” The state supports candidates with Rs 50,000 for language and cultural training. Nurse Laikyrmen Khardewsaw from Ri Bhoi called her journey a “dream come true,” while Jenisha Lyngdoh hailed the “life-changing opportunity.”
With plans to train 500–1,000 youths by 2027 and over 1,000 nurses awaiting placement, Mission Moon, backed by partnerships like the National Skill Development Corporation International, is elevating Meghalaya’s workforce globally. The state’s 8% health budget allocation underscores its commitment to this transformative initiative.
