President Droupadi Murmu’s upcoming visit to Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania reflects India’s expanding engagement with Central and Eastern Europe and its efforts to deepen partnerships with countries in the region, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday. The visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic, economic and strategic cooperation between India and the three European nations.
During a special briefing, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George said the three-nation tour reaffirms India’s commitment to enhancing relations with Central and Eastern Europe. He added that the visit complements India’s broader engagement with Europe and its strategic partnership with the European Union, highlighting the growing importance of regional cooperation.
George said Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania have the potential to play an important role in regional trade and energy networks due to their strategic geographical positions. Located at the crossroads of major transport routes, these countries have developed highways, rail networks and energy corridors connecting Southeastern and Central Europe, making them significant links to wider European markets.

The MEA Secretary also highlighted the interest of these countries in expanding cooperation with India, particularly in the areas of business and connectivity. He said the nations are looking to position themselves as gateways for Indian companies seeking access to the Western Balkans and Europe, creating opportunities to boost bilateral economic partnerships.
The upcoming visit will provide a platform to strengthen collaboration in key sectors such as trade, technology and tourism, which George described as important areas of future cooperation. He said increased engagement in these sectors could contribute to stronger economic ties between India and the three European countries.
The visit also carries historical significance as it marks the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian President to Moldova and North Macedonia. The trip to Romania will be the first State Visit by an Indian President to the country in more than three decades, with the previous such visit taking place in 1994, according to the MEA.
