West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly called for a meeting of the INDIA bloc, signalling an attempt to reset coordination within the opposition alliance following recent electoral setbacks in the state. The move comes amid renewed uncertainty over the unity and future direction of the INDIA bloc, which has faced internal disagreements since its formation in 2023.
The development follows a significant electoral setback for the Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections, where the party’s performance sharply declined compared to its previous tally. Banerjee, who has been a central figure in state politics for over a decade, is now seen as seeking greater coordination with national opposition partners, particularly the Congress, to regain political momentum.
However, the response from within the alliance has so far been unclear. Representatives from both the Congress and the Samajwadi Party have indicated that they have not received formal communication regarding the proposed meeting, though there is speculation that discussions within the bloc could take place in June. The lack of clarity has further highlighted existing coordination gaps among INDIA partners.

Relations between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress remain uneasy despite their shared opposition platform. Recent months have seen public criticism, political disagreements, and contrasting approaches to both national and state-level strategies. Similar tensions have also surfaced between the Congress and other regional allies, including the DMK, adding to concerns about cohesion within the bloc.
The internal dynamics have been further complicated by shifting alignments in different states, with some parties exploring independent strategies or conditional cooperation. While occasional meetings in Parliament have helped maintain a degree of coordination, disagreements over leadership roles, electoral seat-sharing, and policy priorities continue to strain relationships among key partners.
Despite these challenges, political observers note that the INDIA bloc continues to be driven by the shared objective of countering the Bharatiya Janata Party at the national level. Whether Mamata Banerjee’s call for a renewed meeting translates into concrete coordination or exposes deeper fractures within the alliance will become clearer in the coming weeks.
