Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Jalandhar, Punjab, has terminated all Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with academic institutions in Turkiye and Azerbaijan, citing their support for Pakistan during India’s Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.
LPU, the first private Indian university to take such action, joins public institutions like JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia, MANUU, and CSJMU in suspending ties with the two nations.
The decision follows Turkiye’s condemnation of India’s precision strikes on nine terror camps and 11 airbases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, coupled with Pakistan’s use of Turkish drones in the conflict.

LPU’s Founder Chancellor and Rajya Sabha member Ashok Kumar Mittal stated, “When our brave armed forces are risking their lives… we cannot remain indifferent. LPU’s mission is aligned with India’s growth and integrity, and we will never associate with institutions that undermine India’s sovereignty.”
Effective immediately, LPU has ended student and faculty exchanges, joint research, dual degree programs, and all academic collaborations with Turkiye and Azerbaijan. The move aligns with broader retaliatory actions, including CAIT’s trade boycott and Alwar’s ban on Turkish apples, reflecting national outrage.
Turkiye’s $900 million annual exports to India and Azerbaijan’s trade ties face growing pressure as Indian institutions and businesses prioritize sovereignty amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
